The fact that I read rarely comes up in conversation and seems pretty equivocal. Most everyday people have never heard of the authors /lit/ would disparage as "entry level" so it is sort of awkward to discuss. You're not going to have common ground with people. Fuck even at university most people don't give a shit about books. I spent some time with a girl with a degree in English and I don't think we talked about books once, I know I didn't see her read at all. What seems to have happened was that she spent all her time outside of class working or drinking herself stupid. I mean I'm sure some people do read but how does one find quiet bookish people to be friends with, they're not outgoing and neither am I. I sometimes get crazy ideas about leaving a note in /lit/core books from the library but that's just laughable. My uni has not one book club among the hundreds of associations. Then there's the strain of anti intellectualism than runs deep in north american culture. "wow that kid's talking about james joyce again what a pretentious hipster" I don't want to seem "pretentious" or have people think that I'm supercilious.
