I've become a big fan of Spanish-Language literature over the last year. After getting interested by Borges, I read de Vega, Calderon, and de Molina, and in that way worked myself up to Cervantes. I read the Quixote while following along with the Yale lectures on Youtube. I read the Exemplary Novellas between parts 1 and 2 of the Quixote. After that, I read the Dark Night of the Soul by San Juan de la Cruz, and then returned to Borges and finished the major works which I had left to read. I want to move on to the Latin American Boom, but first, I want to bridge the gap by reading through Neruda's Canto General. I'm really drawn in by the idea of a modern epic telling the story of Latin America (a region which gets almost no international attention, second only in that regard to my continent lol). I'm already studying Japanese so there's no chance of picking up Spanish any time soon. Recommendations? Best edition/English translation?

"Llamas dentro de su propia figura oscura bajo el tacto helado sin forma silenciosa oscuridad quemando la sangre"

I was going to post Rilke. I've been really big on him lately.

The next poet I can't get enough of is Neruda

I'm learning Spanish right now, what are some good books/poets for a beginner? Would Pablo Neruda be too difficult for a beginner?

Also, general Spanish lit thread.

What is the Neruda poem called, that ends with "1935" and "I wish that I didn't have to write this" (or something similar)?

Did you know Pablo Neruda raped a woman in Sri Lanka?

Let's discuss this!
