It just seems odd to me that the whole book is named after a character who is only ever glimpsed from the background of the story.

Also her quote about how she hates playing video games.

How stoked is /lit/, on a scale of 10,000,000 to 10 billion—where 10,000,000 is the greatest Longbottom Leaf known to man, and 10 billion is iz-I-in-da-Grey-Havens—for Book 1 of the Hobbit, in theaters this December 18? What are you going to dress up as?

I've already memorized the song from the trailer (immediately one of my favorite songs of all time).

In what ways do you think Jackson will once again improve upon the Tolkien narrative structure? Tolkien was apparently not aware of a concept called tension, and so I imagine that the steaks will be a bit higher. Also, hopefully he'll fix the one major plot error and have Bilbo slay Smaug. Also, I hear that there will be lots of creature design influences left over from the early del Toro involvement on the project.

The Hobbit general.

I'd stop authors from recycling every trope laid down by Tolkien, for starters.

>but what else is there that is narrative and not simply essays and anecdotes from his son, writing about his fathers notes and writing process?

Nothing. The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings were the only books Tolkien ever published. Everything else is excerpts of his notes and letters.

Parts of The Silmarillion were written by Christopher also.

Gimli's poem about Durin the Deathless is my favorite, watch for it.

I know that feel bro. I just wouldn't be able to handle it if Tolkien were a Christian.

Yes.

Keep in mind that LotR will be vastly different from The Hobbit though. You may not like it.

If you like old epics like the Iliad and Beowfulf you should be find, otherwise you might think it's boring.

>In 1968, [Tolkien] objected to a description of Middle-earth as "Nordic", a term he said he disliked because of its association with racialist theories.[105]

So what's up with stormfags idolizing Tolkien?

Would you rather have a Silmarillion that's 50% outline?

Also, without his years of hard work none of us would be afforded the chance to take a more intimate look at Middle-earth by reading all of Tolkien's little scraps and notes.

Sauron doesn't show up anywhere in LotR, except for like one paragraph when he sees Pippin through the Palantir.

How is one supposed to make judgements on what kind of a villain he is if we have nothing to go off of?

Also, he's an immortal demonic entity that's existed since the beginning of time. You're not supposed to be able to relate to him or sympathize with him or understand him at all.

man I love how Tolkien made Bilbo, Frodo, and Sam philologists like himself

There is no one protagonist in LotR OP.

There are basically four.

Because the story is told from a limited 3rd person viewpoint, that of the four hobbits.

IE, Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin are the protagonists, from beginning to end

>But if I am to understand that you are enquiring whether I am of Jewish origin, I can only reply that I regret that I appear to have no ancestors of that gifted people. My great-great-grandfather came to England in the eighteenth century from Germany: the main part of my descent is therefore purely English, and I am an English subject—which should be sufficient. I have been accustomed, nonetheless, to regard my German name with pride, and continued to do so throughout the period of the late regrettable war, in which I served in the English army. I cannot, however, forbear to comment that if impertinent and irrelevant inquiries of this sort are to become the rule in matters of literature, then the time is not far distant when a German name will no longer be a source of pride.[99]
