I agree that people play their own part in selecting who they surround themselves with. In some cases it even seems that some of them want to be lied to, to be fed their idealised version of what they believe a relationship should be, in which case I can agree with you.
However, I think it is more difficult now than probably in all of human history to form meaningful connections with others due to the superficial milieu we find ourselves in.
