Since Joyce is on topic around here, I'm reading Portrait right now. Is this the best starting place? And is this pic still accurate?
I can tell he really likes repetition of phrases and ideas, but I confess I thought I'd be reading more musical prose.

You're ready whenever you want to read it, but this pic here will help. I never read Chamber Music but I read most of everything else. The Suma Theologica is fucking huge and really dry, especially if you don't care about Christianity, you don't have to read that but you should know at least a little bit about Christianity and especially the Catholic Church. At the very least you should read Odyssey but honestly just read Ulysses, be confused, and come back later and read it again.

I also want to read Ulysses and I'm trying to get a good reading foundation before I start because I want to see how it holds up as "One of the greatest literary works in history." I've been using this chart from the wiki in the pinned post as a guide. Additionally, I'm also doing some ancillary reading for the books in the picture as well. For example, before I read the Odyssey, I used the Greek chart and read Mythology by Edith Hamilton, The Trojan War: A New History by Barry S. Strauss and I am currently reading the Iliad. After the Greeks, I was also planning on reading The Aeneid before The Divine Comedy. I don't think all these are 100% required to read Ulysses but this is how I'm choosing to go about it.

Is this accurate? Why Hamlet, Dante, and Aquinas?

Aquinas --> Dubliners --> Portrait --> Ulysses --> Finnegan's Wake

Started Dubliners and it's hands down the best writing I've read yet. I think the build up and the paralytic epiphanies are orgasmic. My favorites so far are Eveline, Counterparts, Clay and A Painful Case. I'm only up to A Painful Case and still have a few more stories to go. I think I need to reread each story at least two or three more times.
How do Joyce's other works hold up? Will reading this chart, and fully digesting everything, really help me understand Ulysses? What about Finnegan's Wake?

Do I really have to read all of these before Ulysses?

I don't usually see people saying you should read the Divine Comedy before Ulysses. Do you really need to read it, or is it just erroneously on this list?
