Not him but its definitely meant to be a study of the characters rather than any specific point or "moral"
Jake himself is little more than a vehicle past the opening chapters of him crying in Brett's arms and the "true" protagonists are probably the latter and Robert Cohn, the poor bastard.
I enjoyed it for the prose and "friend simulator"-ness of it but you're right, I could understand that there's something lacking for most.
The novel wasn't even particularly well-regarded upon release iirc
