I just finished this, /lit/. Can we talk about it? Was Henry's only motive to fuck Catherine? He clearly did not care about her in either her death or the child's. He was so concerned with her body and having something tangible that would reciprocate his desires.

Also, did anyone else find a stark contrast between Henry and Catherine with the whole marriage and prior/future lovers idea? Catherine obviously knew he had women before her, and would continue after her, but wanted him to never love them. Love was sacred to her, and she didn't need physical proof of that, which us why she was content with being "married" without any formality.

Now with the war: fuck the Italians. Hemingway clearly had a vendetta against them. They were raging alcoholic cowards that only liked getting their rocks off. They were also so goddamn ignorant about everything that wasn't Italian. Hemingway idealized Switzerland, and condemned Italy. Even Heny was seen as a fool for willingly joining the Italian army, and no one recognized him as American. Except maybe Catherine towards the end.

Idk, I feel like there was so much to this and I could go on and on about it. How do you guys feel about it. Honestly, probably one of my new top 10 or 15.

've never read any Hemingway, so I thought to myself, 'Self, that is probably something you should remedy.' And now there are a couple of hours of my life that I will never get back. The macho posturing, the awful dialogue (if it were possible to have excised every word he put into the mouth of Catherine, I would have done so), the misogyny, the sometimes bizarre interactions between people... whatever the hell he was trying to do, for me it read as if everyone was either: 1) Certifiably insane, 2) an alien with no knowledge of human interaction or 3) a certifiably insane alien with no knowledge of human interaction. A vapid book full of vapid people.

this book is boring as fuck, just vapid. what am I missing? I just got to book three. at least it's an easy read. will probably finish by tomorrow, but does it get any better? this is my third hemmingway novel, but I liked The Sun Also Rises and Old Man and The Sea a lot more.

Just finished A Farewell to Arms this morning, what are your opinions on it? I thought it was good, I was entertained at times but a lot of it slogged on; the ending was pretty abrupt but I kind of liked it as it fitted with Hemingway's writing style and the whole "feel" I had when reading through.
