It's easy to disregard Pessoa's agony to a certain extent, because he did indeed die a virgin. If he had gotten laid, he'd have been a very different man (not necessarily a better man), preoccupied with different subjects.

Check out Lobo Antunes's interviews where he basically states he can't take Pessoa seriously at all because he was an insufferable virgin pseud who could never write art because he was basically incomplete as a human because he didn't get laid - something to this extent.
And I mean, who could disagree with him? Pessoa was undeniably a gifted, angsty poet, one of the best ever, but he is sterile, like Borges, another brilliant mind whom I love dearly and whose poems are beautiful but arid and disconnected from basic human existence.

By the way, according to fashion conventions at the time, this meant he basically went around in his underwear. He was poor and cultivated that poorness, which made him unactractive and repellent. Basically the equivalent of a heretic, crazy old bum off the street. Probably didn't bathe either.

I'm not shitting on him; rather saying salvation and divine messengers can come from the unlikeliest places. Even the Greek gods disguised themselves as bums numerous times.
