don't equate the popularity of your work with the quality of it

make friends with some lawyers and gain a keen understanding of the legal situation you're in before you proceed

make an effort to fully understand why you want to make your work available before you do so

run it through an editor no matter what you do. this is not optional. if you can only manage paying your grammarian friend to do it, then at least do that.

try to get published before you self-publish. if you've gotten to the point where you're familiar with the publication process, then you can forgo this. but if this is the first thing you've tried to get published, at least write some short pieces and try to publish /those/. this will essentially help with all of the advice i've given so far.
