My mate and I are going to do a jolly read through of The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and then The Lord of the Rings. We are both quite familiar with Middle-Earth, so we're thinking of doing a little pre-reading beforehand of some of Tolkien's influences (Beowulf etc). Are there any suggested Norse/Celtic myths that would enhance Tolkien for us? Or any other proto-fantasy/mythological pieces for that matter?

Anon, in the Silmarillion the elves and dwarves are described on EVERY PARAGRAPH as being master artisans with deep knowledge about the craft and blacksmithing technologies that are unparalleled, it is impossible to be this good and never happen upon a paradigm-shift piece of technology to bring new eras forth.

They had armors and swords and spears way before men woke up, they had castles and magic gems and cool fabric and music. What did men invent? Maybe some catapults and smoking. And a language. Sad!

I'm in my early 20s and looking for books to help me achieve the lifestyle listed below.

>Acquire higher education (got my undergrad applying to masters both STEM, I am currently here)
>Take a gap year to explore the world and different lifestyles
>Serve the republic through military or civil service
>Get a good public service job with a pension
>Meet a normal QT and raise some kids with her
>Build a small homestead with a library to raise my kids on
>Convert the homestead into a larger farm and retire there to live the rest of my life in peace

I think the Romans had a similar idea to this. Are there books where a character goes on this journey or books that will guide me on achieving this?

This has to be one of the saddest copes I've ever seen on this website.
