ok. but here is my question:

>industry breaks with that and so the only outcome of keeping that old system will be ritualized social chaos

the thing we call industry is capitalism, which only leads to more chaos. how to deal with capitalism is what every nation in the world is dealing with today, especially since the era of US global power appears to be waning. this is why the era of strongman or populist politics is returning - trump, putin, xi, and in many parts of europe as well - hungary, italy.

and those places need order. confucianism is good for that. i agree that it's not as philosophically interesting as taoism, and it works on a smaller scale. but even in china the confucians the taoists have learned to get along. the buddhists too.

you can see this happening in india as well. over there they are talking about whether or not hinduism is the same thing as hindutva, or whether they are both evil. look at the caste system. a lot of hindu philosophy is conservative by nature, because it's based on creating a stable order. that stability means people are in their places, which limits their freedom, although they do this for the greater good. modernists and reformers will rebel against this and demand more rights for the individual. how you feel about this depends on how involved you want to get in political questions.

i sometimes think that this is playing out in the west as well in the battle between progressives and conservatives. they both want social order but have different ways of understanding the nature of human beings. in the west we say the individual should have maximal rights and freedoms, but this is why things are so confusing today, because my rights can become your responsibilities and so on.

ultimately confucianism is about the need for harmony but it's complicated. a small taoist village is governed in different ways than an imperial state.

but the daxue is way cool.

wasn't buddhism a rebellion of the warrior caste against the priestly caste? isn't the Bhagavad Gita a text also addressing the warrior caste?
