When the Hachisoto-Sorenson-Rayburn Optical Wiring screentested the first protocol links of what would become the intercontinental light-based dreamworld of the Worldgrid, the sky in fleshspace was the color of an HDTV that was turned off because it was night in Neo-Akihabara and the only light was harsh, neon, staccato, emitting in spurts and globules from thirty megaton explosions in the arcades playing Tank War Europa.

>can only read cyberpunk novels now
>other novels bore me
>need lots of sex, lots of violence, lots of near-future dystopian predictions, lots of fucking with "the man", lots of mindblowing info about cryptography and ancient sumerian myths
I need the full spectrum, /lit/.

You're asking to be groomed by tradcons and cryptofeminists into being spooked into Jingoism, "manning up", and Christinsanity.

Just read pre-feminist philosophy by males. A male thinking for himself and telling you about it? Yeah, that's masculinity. Listen to them and then think about it.

Cyberpunk is a strange genre today because it began in the early 80s as near-future science fiction, but then informed an entire generation of nerds and technologists... who went on to try to make many of its predictions (cyberspace, the Internet, VR) into reality and succeeded at many.

So, is cyberpunk exclusively 80s retrofuturism? Or, does it also include today and tomorrow, because it predicted today?

Snow Crash starts out almost insufferably obnoxious, but it simmers down and gets really, really clever later on. It's worth the wait. The "big twist" is very creative and educational.

It also respects the reader's intelligence and lets you infer quite a few critical things about the world by yourself with no hand holding. There's no "infodump" about a lot of the setting--the characters just take the near-future setting for granted and you slowly figure out what happened in the world between Now and Then through context.
