What kind of life do you think Suttree lived after the events of the novel? Were his days on the houseboat actually his peak? Also, what are some other good books about being a drunken fuckup?

Why is this so fucking hard to read
English is my second language and I was able to read Infinite Jest, The Crying of Lot 49 and The Recognitions with ease, to name a few books that are usually meme'd on here as 'hard'
But with this book I have to look up approximately 5 words every goddamn page and I oftentimes don't get the syntax

Why would anyone jog at around midnight for miles to arrive at a farmers field, locate the quarter acre melon patch, proceed to unbuckle their trousers take out a knife, cut a hole in the fresh melon and fuck the melon? And then after they were caught one night mounting the melon by two men, almost hit by a car trying to run away why would this person come back the very next night at the same time and try to fuck another melon, only to get caught again by the same two men, shot by buckshot spend half a year in hospital and then get locked up and be made fun of for being a botanical pervert by other prisoners and eventually throw their life away for these nights spent fucking melons?

Why would this person ruin an entire patch of melons from repeatedly fucking a fresh new one each night, to avoid gnats biting their penis instead of just masturbating with spit if necessary in the comfort of their home? Was Harrogate circumcised? Is this the only way cutfags can properly get off? Did mccarthy really know someone this happened to?

Didn't care much for McCarthy until I read Suttree.

I finished this 30 seconds ago and my immediate feeling is that running away is a good thing, in a "Don't go Gentle into that Good Night" sort of way. Never let go, never quit fighting, always live your life the best that you can.

BUt alternatively Suttree is a miserable edgy philosophical dingus who ran off on his wife, child, family, friends, everyone. What is his end goal in questioning life and creation? Why does he take all of the horrors he endures with little to no reaction?

Thoughts on Suttree? Picked it up after reading Child of God.

Well, /lit/, I'm about to settle in with pic related. I've got a cup of tea, a top floor apartment with a view of the city, and a nice fluffy papasan chair. Is there anything more comfy?

I'm not one of those far-leftists who dismisses an entire work because he disagrees with one element of it, but there are only so many times I can read a phrase like "sloe-eyed cunt" before I raise my eyebrow. I'd like to say it was a product of the unreliable narrator, but some of the narrative posturing makes me think otherwise- Like how every women is written to be either emotional or haggy. Am I full of shit, or did other people notice this?

I was a compulsive liar until I started to really try to work on changing that. Now I am just a boring person.
