Is this worth reading while high, or would it be better sober?

Any other novels quite like this? I love the self destructive picaresque nature, the fish out of water narrative in contemporary society taken to a comic extreme, a 20th century Candide.

Any ideas?

I actually originally read the book then watched the movie for comaprison, although I will admit this is one of the few instances where I liked the movie better

I just finished this; let's discuss. What exactly was I supposed to get out of it? Hardly anything seemed coherent and it just seemed like ramblings and descriptions of drug use.

Sure, there was the whole thing about the government being behind the social situation of the people, and that the American Dream is just a big old "do whatever the Fuck you want," but surely there has to be more.
