Guest travelled Africa as a journalist for the economist so unsurprisingly he views the world through that lens. It's been a while since I read it but I seem to recall he viewed foreign aid with suspicion and believed free markets and private enterprise would be the tools with which Africa would be lifted from poverty.

It's also interesting to see X listed as the barbarous lieutenant of a bloodthirsty warlord, think "Hmm, where have I seen that name lately?" only to remember they're currently in or running for government in that country 20-30 years later.
