Do people on Lit read sophisticated literature because they enjoy it, or because they want self-satisfaction? Honest question.

So I started to read A Clockwork Orange, and gave up within the first 10 pages, having no idea what the guy was trying to say...Am I just an uncultured fuck?

What does /lit/ like better? English lit or American lit? Or in better terms if you had to major in one which would it be? Or if you have already tell us why.

What do you all think about this book? I thought it was pretty well written and liked it a lot, I thought the author did a good job of making the slang. But my friend confused me about the title and said that it came from a British phrase "as crooked as a clockwork orange, but in the intro to my version it said "as clear as a clockwork orange." Can anyone enlighten me to who is right here?

so im trying to read a Clockwork Orange since I heard it was really good but there are all these words taht I don't know in it. So I looked it up and the only way I could find out waht they meant was to find the online dictionary. I didnt finish because my neck started to hurt after looking up and down from book to screen every ten seconds but i was thinking if this book was made in like the thirtys or something then how did people find out what the words meant?

I thought this book was written in English, not ye ol British slang..

A clock work Orange, I'm sure you've all seen the movie but the last chapter gave me a whole new perspective, IMO basically about "karma" and maturing.
