I had been seeing Aubrey causally for about a month when I found myself waiting in the foyer of her apartment building. The room was just a corridor with elevators to one side and small post boxes on the other. It smelt faintly of bleach and urine. Perhaps someone had slept their night off here recently.
Just as I was considering calling her room again the elevator croaked into place and its doors began to open. Out stepped Aubrey, pretty and pale with dark hair and dark eyes. We had planned to get a cider at the bar just across from her building, but seeing her now I knew she must have had something else in mind. It was after lunch and she was still dressed in Hey Arnold pyjama pants and an old Osaka Hard Rock Cafe t shirt, two sizes too big.
"Coming like that are you?" I asked in an awkward attempt to be humorous.
"I don't think so."
The elevator doors closed behind her.
"So what then? Feeling a tad under the weather?"
She shook her head and I noticed a frown creep across her face.
I suddenly felt a thick knot in my throat and a heavy sinking sensation in my gut. The smell of detergent was suddenly overpowering. I knew exactly why she didn't want to join me for lunch drinks but I was still too anxious to admit it to myself.

It's similar to being a good looking male. I've had conversations with extremely hot chicks about this same thing and it's basically the same experience, maybe even slightly better as an attractive guy. I'm lucky to be born quite a bit above average, looks wise, and also have pretty good taste in style. Though I think I only get away with wearing what I do because I'm alright looking. I'm 27 and it just seems to keep getting more intense.
At uni, on public transport and especially out drinking chicks constantly check me out, and I get approached fairly regularly. Even in the street occasionally. None of my friends are that attractive, and it's so obvious that there is a huge seperation between how women treat them, and how I am treated. Even by my friends girl friends.
Everyone is friendly towards me except occasionally guys want to fight me at the pub for no reason, but it almost never eventuates to anything because I'm quite tall and broad.
Also, just so you know I've been unemployed for four years, and before that only worked a few shit jobs. I've had a series of girlfriends since I was 16 and basically leached off them, parasite style for all of my adult life. Im conscious of doing it, but don't feel good about it.
If you don't assume I'm lying or something, and would like to ask any questions AMA.

Why does it seem like the past is more real or "present" than the future, when both are just as just non-existent? There is no way we can know if the past looked anything like the art from it represents it, or how history says it was; just how we can't know if "futuristic" (not just as in the italian futuristic art) art or science-fiction portrays the future as it "will" be.
If tradition comes from the
past, everything anti-tradition comes from the future?
Aren't the "progressive", "non-traditional" ideas just as oppresive towards the tradition (past) as the tradition is oppresive towards "new ideas" (future)?
Are there any books on this?

In my writing I seem to do a lot of telling, instead of showing. I don't have a lot of experience with narratives and I'm only recently tackling the challenge in a serious way, building a story is tremendously tough. I do think that I have am able, in my own tell and don't show sort of way, to convey a palpable emotion. This usually results in the things I do write full of emotive visuals, descriptions but not a lot of action. Characters are something I have no clue about...

I don't think that I am naturally inclined towards storywriting, I don't ever see myself writing anything more than small stories or scenes and so I wonder what else I could write for. I feel like my ability to evoke an ambiance or feeling is pretty good, but I just don't know what to put it to. I'll continue to try and write stories, try and figure out characters and plot even if I've never been one to tell stories in any bookish way. But I am wondering if anyone may have suggestions, if you were once in a place with limited "range", as you may call it, or what you put your natural ability to practical use in that made it work? I'd appreciate any sort of insight or suggestions, I haven't given up.

So I want to write about a night of debauchery in South America that resulted in me developing feelings for a prostitute and rethinking gender relations(not in a nu-male way)

Should it be an essay or a short story? Who would I submit it to?

p.s. I have been published and work as an editor, so I am not some random dipshit
