The aliens are elephantlike and are psychologically wired to surrender completely when bested, they genocide any town they conquer with any kind of guerrilla activity. We catch their spaceship on one of the Voyager probes and prepare a welcome for it, they smash it and take hostages and a US congressman finds a crazy waifu on board their ship.

The explosions are pretty good, there's a scene where the jumbo bases in the Midwest get nuked and one where a submarine rides out an asteroid tsunami, lots of vignettes of various actions around the world. The characters aren't the best but they're not Asimov, there's a violent legless cosmonaut, an enviromentalist who turns a reporter into fertilizer, a big hairy biker crossing the country while they're dropping rocks on dams and the woman he rescues, sort of... I guess Clancy-quality? Yeah, that's a good comparison, there's always a lot going on.

The Red Rising sequels had some nice space-naval battles. The final battle in Footfall was pretty sweet but I'm not sure it's what you're looking for.

Reminder to read Footfall and go to the zoo and punch an elephant in the face.
