An interesting read seemingly designed to piss of the blend of tradcaths/marxists on this board. I've become far more of a collectivist then I was in my youth and the book doesn't really hold up so well today. Apart from ideological objections, her characters are essentially inhuman mouthpieces for ideals. Where many Russian novelists are masters at voicing philosophical positions through relatable characters, Rand too often relies on inhuman archetypes. All that being said I would be lying if I said there aren't men like Roark in the aerospace profession who I really admire. Like Von Braun they may be immoral, but I have to afford their dedication some respect.

Finally, I cant help, but love the incredible amount of salt in the Goodreads reviews for this book. Not only do so many people dislike the work, they are visibly angered by its existence.

Roark would rather become a construction worker than compromise. Does that make sense from the perspective of a creative? Wouldn't he rather remain close to architecture than to drop it entirely?

What is the best book of the twentieth century and why is it The Fountainhead?

Also, general Ayn Rand/Objectivism thread.

I've been reading pic related, and I'm almost done. But after I really don't want to read any other Ayn Rand book for a while, recs on books in a similar vein?

I think it's a shame that she tried to come up with her own philosophy.

Her books have great things to say about the value of individualism. I found this book very inspiring. However her Objectivist philosophy, is not logically valid.

That said, her emphasis on individualism and selfishness is very important. She had great things to say about self interest and the pitfalls of socialism

Also: that chapter in Atlast Shrugged, where the train is destroyed in the tunnel? That chapter is a masterwork

Thinking about giving this a go. Is it worth reading?
