Read them the Stephen King short story "One for the Road."

It's a kind of epilogue to Salem's Lot, but is a stand-alone story; the story works even if you haven't read the book.

One of his best. Great atmosphere (a blizzard) that builds and builds in tension, with a very satisfying and creepy pay-off.

>Because the town is dead and Ben openly states the fire won’t kill them all.

King wrote a sweet follow-up, "One for the Road," set a few years after Salem's Lot. A slow burn in the dead of winter, growing dread with a very nice payoff. One of my favorite King stories.

Stick to "French noir," then. It's more your speed.

Attached.

And the novel that that story is a brief sequel to, Salem's Lot, is about as good as any horror novel gets, a small handful of arguably superior books (e.g., The Haunting of Hill House) excepted.

No list would be complete without One for the Road.

Wouldn't you agree, my fellow Stephen King fans?
