Is it though? If Portrait is the launching of Stephen out into his artistic endeavors... He simply lands in the dirt in Ulysses. Total anticlimax. In Ulysses the only physical artistic achievement was a book of poetry that AE dismisses entirely. Also there's the oral story he tells at the end of Aeolus. Received at best neutrally.

I don't think there's anything useful to be gained from Portrait regarding Ulysses for the first reading.
