Rate my Summer reading list, /lit/.

>Infinite Jest
>House of Leaves
>Seconds (Bryan Lee O'Malley)

Are these worth the read? Should I read something else? I don't really ever read but I wanna get into it.

What is the highest form of reality in philosophy? Is it nihilism?

Just finished reading quite possibly the stupidest, and somewhat funniest book I've ever read. What's /lit/'s opinion on this retarded piece of crap?

Perhaps /lit/ could enlighten me as to why this book is the second coming of Christ, and why they adore it so much? The only thing that's sticking in my head about this book is the fucked up drug scenes, and head in microwave. I'm 370 something pages into this, and I feel like it's an average novel. Am I missing something?

Yeah, yeah, another thread about IJ.

However: I have yet to see it discussed on /lit/ in the way that I tend to.

What I find fascinating in IJ is that it is the only book (to my knowledge) that deals with the issues of growing up/being a teenager in a world with infinite access to entertainment (ie the internet). Hal is like so many of our generations internet-auto-didacts. He becomes pretty elitist and unhappy, disconnected with his peers and life, and only comes around when he decides to connect with the world over continuing his lonely pursuits.

It's the first (only?) internet bildungsroman, and that's what it does best imo.

Thoughts?

So I just read the first paragraph. Should I just give up? Is the whole novel that wordy?

> One of the things sophisticated viewers have always liked about David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest is its unsubtle thesis that naïveté is the last true terrible sin in the theology of millennial America. And since sin is the sort of thing that can be talked about only figuratively, it’s natural that Wallace’s dark little novel was mostly about a myth, viz. that queerly persistent U.S. myth that cynicism and naïveté are mutually exclusive. The reader, who’s empty but not dumb, theorizes privately that what passes for hip cynical transcendence of sentiment is really some kind of fear of being really human, since to be really human (at least as he conceptualizes it) is probably to be unavoidably sentimental and naïve and goo-prone and generally pathetic, is to be in some basic interior way forever infantile, some sort of not-quite-right-looking infant dragging itself anaclitically around the map, with big wet eyes and froggy-soft skin, huge skull, gooey drool.

What do you actually see in this?

I frequent /lit/ often and a lot of times in threads this book as been praised and praised no end. I finally decided to download it (I prefer to read the book first and then buy a hardcopy if I enjoy it) and I was fairly expectant of a good read. I get into the first few paragraphs and all he does is needlessly describe things for eons. Then when you get into the dialogue it's the most aspie written tripe I have ever had the displeasure of cringingly reading, ‘My transcript for the last year might have been dickied a bit, maybe, but that was to get me over a rough spot. The grades prior to that are de moi.'.

I am not even trying to be edgy I just generally think it is just so incredibly over-wrought and saturated to death with purple prose.

Does lugging big books around seem pretentious? I'm reading IJ and I'm just trying to get it finished as soon as possible, but I'm still in High School and the literary presence in these people are not very high.

Is Infinite Jest as great as you guys depict it to be? Critics all say its a load of shit and amazon has is categorized under single women section. Therefore I am still contemplating buying Infinite Jest or not, and im curious to why everyone on /lit/ loves it so much
