i'm reading this book in english, which is not my native tongue and i think i'm not grasping everything

why is stephen sent to a jesuit school? doesn't his father hate jesuits? what do they believe in exactly? i'm not very familiar with catholicism and all of its branches

what does it mean when he says that his philosophical thoughts come from Aristotle and Aquinas? (because i don't know anything about Aristotle and Aquinas i don't know what this means)

i'm enjoying the prose and Stephen's thoughts and feelings are beautifully displayed, also recurring chiasmus structure of the chapters, makes me think that Joyce was really aware of his talent, that's why he used Stephen as a mirror to compare himself with a unique artist
>JOYCE > STEPHEN < DAEDALUS
or maybe he was a little schizophrenic

Can I get some help formulating a thesis?
I have:

In the novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, James Joyce uses the motif of femininity to depict how one’s internalization and distortion of external input evolves in three phases, lyrical, epical, and dramatic, each of which growing upon the prior despite a lack of change in one’s external environment.

How is it?
This is a first draft by the way.

Halfway through this bad boy and HOLY SHIT it is rather good.

Why did none of you tell me that Joyce is pretty much the greatest prose stylist in the English language?

I can't wait to tackle Ulysses if this is anything to go by.

Joyce, there's a difference between modernism and lolsorandum xD irish may-mays.

all the references to Ireland should be cut, all the meta shit should be cut, half of the political references should be cut.

This is very well written so far but why does Dedalus seem to be retarded? Was James Joyce retarded? How did he write this well when he spent his adolescence thinking "green roses can exist in words but not in life".

Gonna get called a pleb for this but I don't give a fuck.

I've tried reading it 3 times, can't do it. I absolutely hate local color and this book is nothing but that. The notes at the end of the book are almost as long as the main text...flipping to the back 4-5 times per page is unbelievably frustrating.

Is this an ironic novel?
Do you find Stephen interesting and sincere or melodramatic – particularly in the final chapter?

I imagine Joyce writing Portrait of the Artist with ironic hindsight, like he's gazing back at his youth and exaggerating the more fanciful notions, while still remaining sincere with regards to the decision to leave and and pursue art and beauty. Thoughts?

what are /lit/'s thoughts on giving up on books?
not on pic related, I'm loving Portrait

but I was reading The Day of Creation by J.G. Ballard and it got worse and worse and 50 pages from the end I bailed and moved on to something else
