In Keith Thomas’s “Religion and the Decline of Magic,” between pp. 656-658, he describes the relevance of a fly buzzing into a courtroom during the era of the witch-trials. It basically signals the ultimate conclusion of his entire book, which is effectively that “men seldom seek a high degree of proof for what they already believe to be true.”

Comparing the fly on the witch’s forehead to Pence’s contingency within a secular, disenchanted world yields exactly the same conclusion—just slightly different.
