yes, most of these are pretty sensible if you want to get your message across. certainly some of them are included in a lot of style guides e.g. the guardian one, which is regarded as one of the best.
i try to follow rules 2 and 4 all the time, but i have probably broken rules 1 and 3 more times than i can count. i work in a niche area, so i have broken rule 5 too. thank goodness for rule 6.
