Any cri de coeur of the white working-class English male set down in novel form would be entirely unread by that class, nominally remarked upon in The Telegraph, and quickly forgotten. At best it's cited in mid-tier contemporary lit and sociological studies for its subject, not its prose; at worse, you've churned out a meeker Turner Diaries.

Look Back in Anger Pt. II or another Taste of Honey would not be a good look for British fiction, as it could only really be seen as retrograde in both an aesthetic and political sense. A quintessential contemporary London novel, say, ought to take on the housing crisis in a really 19th c. specific-amounts-of-money-mentioned way. (I realize this sounds "retrograde" as well, but this would only be in form -or "attack," as it were- not subject.)

>turning to the dark side

I'm considering it, my highfalutin journalistic ideals set sail a long time ago, when I met the rest of the people in the program.

I'm actually really scared about this whole job thing.

I had a professor who is a papyrologist last semester. He said that the dams and channeling of water throughout the region in the past few decades, have probably dissolved most of the unearthed papyri at this point.

But apparently it's not too major of a bummer, as they're still like a million untranslated papyri. There are some that are literally unrollable, charred pieces of a wood-like material that they're currently trying to read with lasers and shit. It's an exciting time in the field.

You might actually be right. I mean, I don't think Tao Lin would really be read if he didn't have his cadre of followers/imitators, and I definitely know shit writers like Marie Calloway and Ben Brooks wouldn't be read if they didn't have that crowd to latch onto.

Getting closer, at least it's better than the "Yeah, no" I got last time. Also, /lit/ status report for your submissions.
