Exactly. Discussion, if left alone, will tend towards the two largest points of view subsuming the others. From this position there is only one way to proceed. Each side will become more and more extreme in an attempt to overcome the other. Your opponent does not just disagree with you, he is your enemy, he is trying to kill you, he is trying to destroy everything you love, and you must attack him now, before he does the same. And as for anyone who does not agree with you, well, they're enemies as well. You must not be a social democrat, you must be Marxist. You cannot be a neo-con, you must be fascist.

/qa/ and basedjacking are a perfect microcosm of this. Relatively civil discussion quickly devolves into shitflinging contest of ACKjacks vs Chudjacks. This is where I think Farenheit 451 gets it right, in comparison to something like 1984. The people (as a group) are ultimately responsible for this. Their own human nature causes the dystopia, and not some external force.
