How do you reconcile the idea of timshel that Steinbeck presents with Cathy’s character?

Cal is the poster boy for it and you can see it all in him, the good and the bad, but Cathy is always described as missing something. I guess she’d be called a socipath today. In a novel about how every man may rule over sin, is it undermining to have a character that is pure evil?
