I see what you mean. Most people in olden days were simple, superstitious and vivacious. The 1001 Nights capture that feeling quite well. What do you think of Richard Burtons translation? I love it's verbose and baroque style, it has a dreamlike feel and some passages are almost written as beautifully as something out of the King James Bible.
