For some reason, I love this painting by Lermontov.

[I wonder where the real one is located...]

Yeah, but I also think (a) people who read the original Russian (a lot of reviewers claim to) and (b) Nabokov know whether the translation is authentic.

Hey, /lit/. I have a bunch of English translations of Russian novels - many of which I've read, and many of which I have not read. I've heard that Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky have the greatest translations. Many of my books, however, are translated by Constance Garnett (The House of the Dead, Poor Folk, Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, The Brothers Karamazov, The Double, Notes from the Underground, Fathers and Sons, Anna Karenina, The Torrents of Spring, and Family Happiness). A lot of this books - if not all of them - have been translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. Aside from the fact that replacing books is annoying, their translations are rather expensive. I don't know how many /lit/erates have read translations by both, but I was wondering if I'm somehow missing something by reading Garnett's translations. Help?

How do you like to read, ideally? What position are you in? Where are you? That sort of thing.

Lermontov was a ballin' painter, too.
What other writers painted as well?
