When I understood it was looking at Dickinson and realising her poems had strong structures and objective meaning, if idiosyncrasies, as a response to romantic era subjective truth within changing structures. Early America was a stable world where everyone played by the rules of the game of capitalism, certainly more than traditional European life. She is really a quintessential modernist.

I then realised that Elliot was more a return to romantic ideas, but in a soulless world. In a world where social structures are dissolving in the pursuit of maintaining capitalism, and with the threat of atomic bombs, you had neither the structure of modernism nor the hopefullness of romanticism.

At least that’s how I understood it. These terms are as ambiguous as the true nature of god, in that you can approach understanding but never reach it.

Where the alt-right view arises is that this new world means an individual must find meaning independent of society, and class consciousness and inclusion in an activist group are both great proxies for belonging. It just happens that Marxist theories(I mean in the sense of social sciences which won’t cite anything before Marx, and whose citation networks inevitably centre on Marx’s work) provide a great excuse to form these bonds. As does belonging to a strong religious movement, which is why the internet has hosted both super fedoras and hyper trad Catholics(at least people who self identify as such) so far this millennium.

That would quite literally fit as an appendix to Brave New World just as much as Neitzsche.
