When I was 16 I was wasting time on some cracked.com-tier site or it may have been that one and I saw a list about books that had been banned in the past and the description of Naked Lunch made it seem interesting so I ended up reading it. After that I read a newspaper review of The Pale King that mentioned DFW had tried LSD which made me decide to read it. After reading those two from them on it was pretty much /lit/-tier books

"The Globalization of Poverty and the New World Order" by Chossudovsky is excellent, regardless of the spuriousness of some of the articles other people post on the news site he runs.

Understanding the why and how of IMF/WTO/World Bank policy towards various countries from the 70's through the 90's is essential to understanding everything else in those realms you mention. It sounds a little boring but its actually really interesting and well-written.
