Sanderson is a decent writer, but no one can say he is a talented writer. The guy just wrote so much over the years he was bound to get a publishing deal at some point. Elantris was his 14th book? His writing is serviceable, but he won't awe you with prose. He has a way with plotting and setting up mildly interesting worlds. He is, I think, an apt starting point; a babby's first fantasy book writer if you will. Very blue collar writing which is easy to understand and even the most finer details of books are explained thoroughly. You will never end a Sanderson book thinking: What the hell did just happen? If you are the kind of reader who likes books for the plot but don't care for the literary merits, then go ahead enjoy him. Personally I think his best work is The Emperor's Soul.
Brandon is the MCU of young adult fantasy. Enjoyed by millions but not really praised for his work by those more well read. It is no wonder many like him, like many people like overly sweet wine or bulk beer. Of course, people go for the easily consumed options that require no work on part of the consumer. People will gladly spend hours on end in instagram watching easy videos than watch "artsy" movies. And similarly, people would rather read, or in today's world, listen to easy books that have gripping, page-turning plots than lose themselves in more nuanced works.
