I'm just a humble anon, but in my limited writing experience it's been so much easier to have an outline established before getting to the pulp of my writing. I just use an excel spreadsheet to order chronological events, character developments, and general ideas before sitting down, picking out a square, and just writing a chapter or two on it.

Pic related, I just made a plot chart a few days ago.
