on the offchance that you're actually looking for a good book and aren't just making a low quality blog/bait thread, skylark

this book dealt really well with the realities of having a disappointing lonely life, there is some consolation in that it's very beautiful and often funny, and love does exist, but it doesn't shy away from the shabby, mediocre aspects of life that most of us experience but rarely gets articulated in literature

this is my favourite

it's hard to say why exactly but these books give me so much pleasure every time

i've said it a million times before and i'll say it again, skylark by kosztolanyi
if you can get past the fact that she's a female, the fact that she's a stupid, ugly, untalented, annoying, mediocre, but painfully self-aware virgin who lives with her worried but well meaning parents will hit home very hard

any good book that strikes an empathetic chord
there's two elements: how the characters speak to you, and how the author speaks to you
both can be really good and make you feel that spark of human connection and feel less lonely and that someone, somewhere can understand, and also, importantly, that you can understand someone else
my favourite book for both reasons is skylark by dezso kosztolanyi. the author has an immense sympathy for all of his characters, and you feel his empathy throughout, but then various characters also have empathy and touchingly real relationships that also feel real. it doesn't shy away from the dark, terrible side of life, the disappointing miserable aspect and really go deep into it in a way that's both uncomfortable, but also makes you feel like someone else understands it
it's a real book by a real person about real people that will make you feel emotions
