I always felt that Infinite Jest was somewhat similar to Eva in emotion and themes. Both have goofy funnish moments, but also filled with people who are lonely and broken inside. Specifically, there's also that one part where Hal's phatom-dad is going on about not wanting Hal to become a background character in his own life and I think Shinji has a similar dilemma. What do my fellow /lit/-xistards think?

Just finished reading DFW's E Unibus Pluram. It amazes me the way he was able to clearly dissect and examine such a large part of his contemporary culture's dysfunction. Finishing it has made me wonder...

What the hell is going on today? Things have certainly changed since 1990, but I'm at a complete loss as to what the deeper mechanism behind our own generation's problems are. Something to do with the internet and social media, surely, given that they have been such extreme forces of cultural change, but what is it exactly about them that is causing all of the unhappiness of our generation? Is it limited to only a subset of our generation, or do these technologies take a serious toll on everybody? I just don't know.

This is embarrassing, but it was "The School of Athens" in issue 014. A lot is wrong with it that is also wrong with my "better" pieces. It was partially based on a conversation I'd witnessed in a certain comment section.
I don't know what I was thinking.
