Hands down one of the best novels I have ever read. Here's a Wikipedia synopsis of it:

The novel follows two modern-day academics as they research the paper trail around the previously unknown love life between famous fictional poets Randolph Henry Ash and Christabel LaMotte. Possession is set both in the present day and the Victorian era, contrasting the two time periods, as well as echoing similarities and satirizing modern academia and mating rituals. The structure of the novel incorporates many different styles, including fictional diary entries, letters and poetry, and uses these styles and other devices to explore the postmodern concerns of the authority of textual narratives. The title Possession highlights many of the major themes in the novel: questions of ownership and independence between lovers; the practice of collecting historically significant cultural artifacts; and the possession that biographers feel toward their subjects.

Read pic-related. One of the greatest novels I have ever read and it's by a woman. The integration of Victorian prose and poetry with modern anxieties is some of the most seamless writing I have ever witnessed.

Possession: A Romance by A.S Byatt. It is one of the best novels I have ever read, constructed perfectly. It is especially good if you have a love for Victorian culture and poetry. I have mentioned this novel so many times, yet people don't take notice. Here's a brief synopsis from Wikipedia:
The novel follows two modern-day academics as they research the paper trail around the previously unknown love life between famous fictional poets Randolph Henry Ash (based off Alfred, Lord Tennyson and Robert Browning) and Christabel LaMotte (based off Christina Rossetti and Emily Dickinson). The title Possession highlights many of the major themes in the novel: questions of ownership and independence between lovers; the practice of collecting historically significant cultural artefacts; and the possession that biographers feel toward their subjects.

I've often recommended these two books on /lit/, but everyone constantly obsesses over the "big three". If you folks love Victorian literature I highly recommend the two books "The French Lieutenant's Woman" by John Fowles and "Possession: A Romance" by A.S Byatt. Both deal with Victorian culture, fiction, philosophy, and poetry with such care and vigor that it is almost hypnotizing.

"Possession: A Romance" by A.S Byatt is grossly underrated. It follows two modern day scholars' discovery of love letters between two fictitious Victorian poets based off of Robert Browning/Alfred, Lord Tennyson and Emily Dickinson/Christina Rossetti. Absolutely stunning prose, but what's even more impressive are the poems that she wrote in Victorian style. Fantastic novel.

Possession: A Romance by A.S Byatt. No joke. This novel is hands down one of the best novels I have ever read. It follows to literary scholars that discover love letters between the fictitious Victorian poets Randolph Henry Ash (who is based off of Robert Browning/Alfred Lord Tennyson) and Christabel LaMotte (who is based off of Emily Dickinson/Christina Rossetti). As the love story unravels, Byatt implements fictitious poems, journal entries, academic essays, and other historical fiction techniques to illicit a strong narrative. I highly recommend, especially if you're a lover of Romantic and Victorian poetry.
