What books will motivate me to be a better man? Like the motivational quote picture threads we've been having, but for actual literature.

Pic related, the Stoics are great for this and the "get the fuck out of bed" passage from Meditations is exactly the kind of thing I want more of.

Fantastic read and a great insight into the thoughts and feelings of an equally monumental Roman Emperor. You guys need to stop memeing and get more people to read this—you won't necessarily agree with him but you'll be a tad wiser at the end of the day.

One thing I did not quite understand while reading was his self deceptive way of undermining music; chopping it up into bits made it beautiful no longer? Whereas elsewhere he would emphasize how a group of disjoint object makes for a harmonious whole. Did his disdain for music stem from somewhere else? Is there some sort of follow up one should read to fully understand his ideas or some sort of Roman version of Herodotus' Histories for better insight into Roman thought of the time?

give me one good reason why stoicism isn't the most based philosophy of all?
