I grew up in basically an entirely white city/state before anyone talked about race at school or anything, and when I was maybe 7 or 8 I read Gone with the Wind. It has a lot of slavery apologia in it, and goes on and on about how the slaves didn’t know where to go after they were freed. IIRC they have a mammy stereotype that doesn’t even leave after being freed or something insane like that.
I absorbed it unquestioningly and repeated it verbatim to a bunch of people until some adult took me aside and explained.
