In short, the problem is like medicine treating the symptoms rather than overall health. Lifting is for those in a perpetual state of training but will never get to compete.
And it's funny because for all the tough talk there doesn't seem to be any evidence that anyone is reading Starting Strength, let alone following it. It says very clearly that your training is heavily dependent on training the mind and nervous system before the body. And this is confirmed by the ancient greek wrestlers and similar traditions today. If you look at the famous images of wrestlers they tend to have very small arms, and great core strength. It was also a mental or divine strength which made the greatest wrestler in history. Spiritual strength, he probably wasn't even that big.
