The mix of books raises a host of suspicions. I imagine the classics are all vestiges of schooldays past, or taken from the parental bookshelf. In my least charitable reading they are fillers mixed in to flesh out what looked a sparse and undistinguished bookshelf. Notice the more accessible organisation of popular books on the top shelf. Think in terms of affordance. Her heart is with the books she has arranged so as to be most immediately accessible to her. That said, why is joyce there ready to hand? Surely by my own logic her heart is there? Perhaps. But look, then, at the ornamental toys on top of the books. Perhaps her heart has forgotten books altogether for some time now, and the shelf has sat there for a number of years relatively untouched. Maybe she has read every single of of those books. Who knows? She has a nice legs and I appreciate her tan lines.
