Meaning-as-use rules out name-object relations as the bedrock of understanding, as the calculus used in the Tractatus falls short of accounting for the totality of the games we take part in: meaning is expressed by use, and this public use or recognition precedes any mental processes we engage in.

Recognition may trigger an inner mental process, but it is contingent upon public referents and its validity is not determined internally.

Could we not say then that there is simply some complex inner process we are unaware of that precedes our recognition? That makes this recognition of public stuff possible in the first place, without which meaning falls apart?
