Good book. Long. Lots of footnotes. Full of a lot of bullshit. Would recommend.

I really liked this book and I don't understand why. It's pretentious and long and hard to read but I think about it a lot because he covered so much. There's a complex story and he covers aspects of the human condition but I still don't know how it did it through the dense ridiculous writing

Why are the overly-dogmatic and controlling practices of AA--which is supposed to make its members fixated to a point of dependence and borderline worship--portrayed as a good thing, even though one of the primary themes of the novel is about becoming independent from the things which control you in that sort of obsessive and all-consuming way?

Why is so much of the book about addiction? Was DFW a junkie?

Any Jestlike literature out there?

Plodding boredom. The last gasp of irony in literature, I don't even feel as if DFW had any passion by the end of this one, it was as if he'd begin to realise he'd carried a joke on for too long and was running out of steam.

When a guy tells me this is one of their favorite books I immediately ghost him.

I like it so far, it isn't wowing me yet, but it has kept me engaged and I do like it so far. Around 55 pages in currently.

What do you think happens at the end of this novel? Whenever I read what people think happened they just regurgitate what the reddit founder's interpretation was and while I think there is some degree of accuracy there I don't 100% agree and for some reason I can't find diverse speculation online.

100 pages in and nothing has happened, convince me to keep going

Before you embark on your journey into the mind of a genius, you have to understand a few things that are very important. When we talk about David Foster Wallace, we’re talking about a man whose I.Q. could not be measured. Past 200, I.Q. tests get imprecise. We don’t know whether we’re dealing with a man with an I.Q. of 200 or 300 or what. We can’t measure it. When it comes to Wallace-tier geniuses, the standard tests simply don’t apply. You see, Wallace could have entered any field he wanted. He was a real-life Will Hunting.

. You must understand that, on your first time through, you will not understand everything Wallace is trying to communicate to you. Don’t worry. He knew things about life that we won’t discover for decades. Your job is merely to get on the road. In the decades to come, we may, if we’re lucky, discover scientific applications for the new ways of thinking Wallace gave us. We may have to throw out science altogether. We simply don’t know. For now, we have to be content with our vanguard roles. We are the ones who will break the ground and loosen the soil for Wallace’s future interpreters. This is not only our pleasure, but our duty. And for that, as Wallace famously said, “I wish you way more than luck.”
