Does Robert Walser count as obscure?

What does /lit/ think?

I've only read a bit of Jakob von Guten so far. I'm not sure I should continue, but this guy gets such rave reviews. I'm afraid perhaps that it's because he's so obscure.

I mean I thought Catcher in the Rye was edgy teen-angst ...

So what are some ways you c/lit/s discover new books and authors?

I'd like to hear about your methods, techniques, websites you use, etc. Stories about your recent author/book discoveries would be interesting too. Personally, a few of my ways,

>check the translator of a loved book, look up other book s/he has translated
>comb through the entire catalog of small publishers who've published loved books
>check the table of contents of definitive and/or obscure anthologies
>read books that name-drop large amounts of other books and authors

Share yours, /lit/!

If you mean author deaths similar to their writing, Robert Walser sort of had that:

"Robert Walser loved long, lonely walks. On the 25th of December 1956 he was found, dead of a heart attack, in a field of snow near the asylum. The photographs of the dead walker in the snow are almost eerily reminiscent of a similar image of a dead man in the snow in Walser's first novel, Geschwister Tanner."

Favorite author deaths?

Mine is Robert Walser, dying while taking a pleasant walk through a field and collapsing in the snow. Nice and quiet.

Your turn.
