The typified mediocrity of these "Blood Meridian" threads is officially annoying now.

the only media to ever make me tear up was (1) that part in Deep Impact where the blind guy is saying goodbye to his newborn daughter who he's never gotten to see and he's about to die to save the earth and (2) the end of season 8 of Scrubs when there's that future-scene where they all have kids and they're having Christmas dinner and they're all so happy fffffuck

wow i am a fag

Benjamin has a wonderful article about the faults of the novel ("the Storyteller"; it's in Illuminations). Basically (if I recall - it's been a few years) his point is that the narrative closure and linearity of novels (that is, most novels at his point in time) truncates what is really valuable in storytelling, which is the open-endedness and meaningful multiplicity of the narrative.

I could be butchering the essay but that's what I seem to recall

The hubris of analytic philosophers. Why do they think their understanding of concepts is the only valid one? Why must an anthropologist or a literary critic clarify what they mean for them when it is taken as rote knowledge within their own discipline. Why are analytic philosophers above using a dictionary?

They make interdisciplinary research a task instead of a valued methodology.

Well yeah,
On the one hand we have the question of Josef K´s character.
On the other hand the said girl´s perception of him, and of me, and of the similarities between us.

I do not understand either of those issues. But I did think the latter could make a good topic for lighthearted conversation.

Alright, it´s 4:30 here, I´m off to bed.

Anyone else start their PhD today?

Thoughts?

I for one am UNIMPRESSED. The other students seem uneducated and the courses seem easy. What makes this unbearable is that I am at a world renowned institution. Seriously they didn't know who the Young Hegelians were or what Critical Theory is. What are philosophy PhDs coming to these days?

Any other Historical Materialists depressed while the sheep celebrate their so-called freedom. Post-Marxists free to post too.

Personally I'm taking this time to reread Žižek's "The Sublime Object of Ideology." However, I find that Žižek is good only in small doses so I might read a few of Benjamin's essays in "Illuminations" later. What are you doing?

Is not filling out the census the best example you can come up with? not trying to be a dick, but I'm a semi-Trotskyist with syndicalist sympathies, and I don't get how non-compliance can tear down capitalism at all, precisely because it's so pervasive. And even if an alternative, anarchomarxist community appeared and flourished, if it weren't dismantled, no one would join it in the first place because the indoctrination within capitalism is so pervasive (culture industry etc., I dunno).
