What this guy said

Also books about Asia, like Water Margin, Hagakure, A Tale of Red Mansions or even stuff like The Good Earth. Sometimes a book can be even more "challenging to your mode of thought" when written by an appalled foreigner (like Ahmad ibn Fadlan).

Yeah, I know, but there are plenty of e.g. transcriptions of oral legends. And people have shitloads of time to think about stories when they're off hunting, foraging or planting crops.

Modern-day orientalists are just aping Western sycophants. Saladin, Chaka, Montezuma, Tokugawa, etc. would NOT approve.

Peri- or post-colonial works don't challenge euro modes of thought because they're about people living in euro societies. You are looking for something more like Jung's African diary from "Dreams, Memories, Reflections".

TL;DR Troll thread but valid question. There's tons of books about alien societies, most of which ironically only exist because of colonization.

Awesome, thanks I'll check those out as well. White Noise seemed really out there and interesting when I looked it up which is what drew me to it.

So I'm looking to write a thesis on the culture of humans interacting with machines. I've been looking for a nonfiction account of the life of an early mill/factory worker. I started out looking for a journal of some kind.

Any discussion of this topic is encouraged.
