I finished Tower Of Glass by Robert Silverberg, which is a first-contact story as well as a book about androids, from 1970.

A billionaire constructs a thousand-metre communications tower in the arctic circle in order to communicate with extra-terrestrial intelligence in space. He uses a labour force of red-skinned androids, who he invented, and who worship him as a God in an underground religion.

The novel follows the construction of the tower as the androids begin to agitate for civil rights and political representation. There's a lot of religious allegory, as well as android sex. It's a fast read, and a worthwhile companion to something like PKD's Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep.
