Am I stupid for liking the Dunk and Egg novellas better? I find them more fun and light hearted but love its connections to the 'present' series.

'The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' or 'The Tales of Dunk and Egg' are my go to. Dunk is my all time favorite fantasy character, he's kind but unassuming. He's not sharp, but humble about it. Loyal to his friend and future king. They're a wonderful celebration of chivalry and knight errant stories. If you like ASoIAF, these are a must read, but they're not required to appreciate; you can read them as stand alone and they're still greatly enjoyable. If read in tandem
to the main series, it first seems pointless but in the larger scope, the two protagonists are the equivalent of Forest Gump bumbling through important events of the world's history.

I'd say the novellas are his best work. Condensed into a knight errant story, with interesting interactions to the main still feels as if it has an effect on the world. They're a fun read and Dunk is one of the most lovable protagonists in fantasy.

Unironically the Tales of Dunk and Egg, or A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (a collection of the novellas with sketches). It's light hearted knight errant tale, but it has such a breath of optimisms in ASOIAF's world, which is usually just dread. You don't need any knowledge of the main series, its a cute story, with a good message of having a good heart even in a cruel world and humbling yourself.

Unironically the tales of Dunk and Egg series. But more specifically the Hedge Knight. Song of Ice and Fire is kinda overdone, I know, but the novellas have such an air of optimism on a bleak world. I just find Dunk not bending his values inspiring, it's not the best, but it's my favorite.
