More of her backstory comes out later, I agree there's not a lot of 'weak' women main characters. There are a few that show up later. Regarding sauce though, I think it's confirmed that she can't get pregnant and also she's not that attractive. As to why she's not getting raped though, I think it has to do with women being less uncommon in armies on the continent and that's where their company was formed. She's not the only woman in the company and they already have literal whores as camp followers.

The history of the captain and the few who started with him is drip fed over the next few books, sauce was one of them.
