I'm embarrassed that this rests on my bookshelf.

Neil Gaiman holds the rare quality of being at once popular, esteemed by the establishment, active, alive, and screaming about the important things like libraries, and genre fiction, and making good art.

I promise I'm not an escapist autist. I hate most of Gaiman's fans, I just love his work more.

Just finished this, and really liked it. What is the consensus of this novel and Gaiman in general on this board?

Hey.
Quick question.
I'm reading pic related and wanted to know if the little things about coming to america at the end of each chapter really adds to the story in the end or not....
I'm finding those parts incredibly boring and hard to read so i'm wondering if it'll hurt the story if I skip them...?
Thanks.

Why did so many people love this book?

It's one of the most boring books I have ever read. I didn't care about the characters at all, and it moved so slowly. Even though I am kind of obsessed with ancient mythology I still couldn't get myself to give a shit about it.

So I finished American Gods and Lord of Light recently, and I really liked this kind of mythological fan-fiction. Any other good books out there with mythological figures as main characters?

Newfag here; I recently realized that I don't enjoy films or tv shows nearly as much as I enjoy books. I'm a slow reader so I haven't read much yet but I plan to in the near future. Anyway this is my only read for 2012 so far and it was god damn fantastic. Sandman is also good. Neil Gaiman: discuss.

Is this worth reading? 15 minutes in and someone has been eaten by a vagina. The protagonist seems like Gordan Freeman.

I thought this was supposed to be deep.

Just finished this.

It wasn't that great. I did however enjoy the idea and plot. The execution was just terrible.

Is there something similar to this but good?

so I started reading American Gods because I keep hearing it's a great urban fantasy book. I'm at the halfway point, and honestly i'm not impressed. All the side stories/excerpts about gods in the old days and in the modern age is more boring than anything. I get that it's helps set up the context and atmosphere of the story but it's mostly just meh to me. what's the big deal with this book? does it get expotentially better towards the end?

American Gods, is it good? I'm about a third of the way in and I can't decide. Is there anything Gaimen wrote that's good that I should read?

Hi /lit/,

I read the first volume of Neil Gaiman's Sandman and really liked it. I started reading AG today pic related) and am currently 100 page through. To be honest, I am a bit disappointed. Whereas Gaiman is capable of developing ideas in a splendid way, his writing style \and prose are very poor; that's why I think the Sandman series turned out to be a splendid piece of work since most of the story telling takes place through the drawn art and the dialogue.

Is my impression about Gaiman correct, or is it just AG? Is the novel worth putting further time into it?

does this book get better? I'm at the part where he meets his ghost wife for the first time in the hotel and it still reads like an average thriller.

And the fuck kind of name is Shadow anyone? that's the kind of name you'd expect the mysterious brooding hero of a third rate action film to have

I just finished this yesterday. I don't know quite what to think about it just yet... the build up to the end wasn't that dramatic or engaging so I knew there was gonna be a twist (and there was). I really liked the descriptions of the different gods though. Loved the attention to detail (and trying to guess which gods were which when we didn't know).

I wanted a little feedback on American Gods the other day, so I went to /co/ knowing the crowd and the content matched best.
I was swarmed with nearly a hundred posts in under an hour.

Hey, /lit/

Any thoughts on American Gods? My girlfriend and I usually read books together, with each of us taking turns on picking one. She brought this up, and after reading the description it doesn't seem very interesting.

What's it like? I really enjoy fantasy and sci fi, which is what this is labeled, but it doesn't sound very fantasy or sci-fi from the description.
